Mr Andrew Knight

Mr. Andrew Knight is a recognised authority on developing and applying the UK Higher Education Safety in Fieldwork Guidance. He was personally involved in defining the requirements of British Standard 8848 ‘Specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions, and adventurous activities outside the United Kingdom.’ Andrew is available to universities on a consultancy basis is as a GCORE Advisory Board Member to assist with matters including but not limited to as field research safety, animal protocols, IT systems for safety, risk management, accident statistics analysis, quality and effectiveness of safety programs and occupational health.
Andrew is the former Chair of the Universities Safety and Health Association (USHA) UK project group on safety in fieldwork. Andrew is a Chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and a member of the International Institute for Risk and Safety Management. He holds a B.Sc. (Hon’s) in Biology and Geography, a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health and has completed the British Standards Institution OHSAS 18001 Internal Auditor course. Andrew is author of the Health, Safety and Environment Dictionary and the Health and Safety Assessment Workbook for Offices.
Andrew has over 15 years experience as a Health and Safety Adviser providing safety solutions to a range of public and private sector clients. In 2008 he joined the British Standards Institute BS8848 Specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions, and adventurous activities outside the United Kingdom technical committee and in the same year was awarded a University of Brighton Excellence in Facilitating Learning Award for innovation in safety training. In 2011 the Safety in Fieldwork project group launched guidance on safety in fieldwork for UK higher education at the Royal Geographical Society in London. The project was a runner up for partnership working between USHA and the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) in the SHP IOSH Awards 2011.
Andrew recently participated at the forum for prevention of the World Congress for Health and Safety and delivered talks on fieldwork safety to the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association.
