October 2024 Video Streaming News: Improved Speed, Flexibility, and Viewer Experience

This month, we’ve got some exciting news on Gcore Video Streaming updates to improve speed, flexibility, and your customers’ experience. Here’s a breakdown of our recent improvements and how they can benefit your company as you deliver top-notch streaming experiences to your audience.

WebRTC to HLS/DASH: A Streamlined Experience

We’re thrilled to announce that our new WebRTC to HLS/DASH feature is now available to all customers, even those in trial mode! This new capability means you can easily start live streaming with just a few clicks—no need to juggle third-party tools like OBS or FFMPEG for testing. Simply navigate to Live Streaming in the Gcore Customer Portal, and you’re ready to go.

This ease of use provides the following benefits:

  • Get started faster: No additional software setup is needed.
  • Streamline testing: Jump into trial sessions without complex configurations, making it ideal for customers who want a quick start.
  • Scale easily: Our WebRTC to HLS/DASH functionality supports a wide variety of streaming needs, from testing to full production.

We invite you to explore our open-source demo app and see how easy it is to use WebRTC with HLS/DASH.

Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) Soft-Limiting for VOD

For customers focused on video-on-demand (VOD) streaming, we’ve introduced adaptive bitrate (ABR) soft-limiting in MPEG-DASH .mpd manifests. This feature provides flexibility in delivering the exact quality levels you want, helping improve bandwidth efficiency and audience experience by enabling the following:

  • Selective quality control: Define quality limits with -min-N and -max-N to return only the qualities you need to avoid overloading lower-end devices with high-bitrate options.
  • Enhanced viewer experience: By delivering a more targeted list of qualities, viewers experience fewer interruptions due to buffering or quality changes.

This soft-limiting is a powerful tool for providers who need a fine-tuned approach to ABR streaming. It’s particularly useful when serving a diverse audience on multiple devices and networks.

WHIP Protocol Support: Best of Both Protocols

With support for WebRTC HTTP Ingest Protocol (WHIP) alongside our WebRTC to HLS/DASH converter, Gcore Video Streaming brings you the advantages of both protocols.

Using WHIP with our converter offers two key benefits:

  • Reduces latency in live streaming, delivering more responsive streams to your viewers.
  • Increases flexibility for ingestion, perfect for providers managing a complex, multi-location infrastructure.

WebRTC-HLS functionality enables users to start live streaming instantly with a single click directly from Gcore Customer Portal.
