Currently, it takes mere minutes for Wargaming to deploy server architecture. What’s more, there is no need to go through a complex approval process as all actions are performed via the self-service portal. In just a few clicks, one can create virtual machines with the required operating systems and settings. After the process is finished, they can be dismantled just as quickly. The customer can estimate the development and testing costs for each function, as well as the efficiency of business processes, using built-in reports.
Design
Hundreds of designers working in game companies draw characters, create textures and locations, model light and smoke, and calculate gravity and complex movements. To allocate a high-performance graphics station for each of them is a rather expensive approach. Besides, the workload is usually distributed unevenly among employees, which reduces the efficiency of these resources.

The load on game company’s servers is distributed unevenly. User activity can be spurred by seasonal factors, holidays, or new releases. Marketing is a factor as well since promotions and sales dramatically increase the influx of new players. As a result, the load on the game company can grow several times in a matter of hours or minutes.
Thus, the cloud infrastructure of game developers, in addition to good performance, must provide a high level of resilience. To do this, the availability of cloud resources must be ensured above all else. Large providers allow their customers to deploy any amount of capacity in just a few minutes. For example, when Walking Dead: No Man’s Land was released, more than a million users downloaded it in just the first weekend. The playtime during those days totaled about 31 million minutes. But the developer’s cloud infrastructure turned out to be unprepared for such a load.
In addition to the “good stress” associated with the influx of users, emergencies like equipment failure are inevitable. At the same time, the classic IT infrastructure requires serious investment to ensure reliability:
- Hot server redundancy.
- Usage of alternative data centers.
- Backup storage in geographically distributed locations.
